Currently Spanish wine is enjoying a popularity that is arguably unlike any other wine region has experienced. Spanish wine regions, winemakers and wines themselves are continuously receiving accolades and positive press. I myself have never before seen the value-to-dollar ratio that is found in most of the Spanish wines currently being produced. Value aside Spain has the added advantage "of the something for everyone" factor. From the new wine regions that are popping up every day to the classic old world staples that have dominated the Spanish wine-scape for years; there is not much that Spain dose not bring to the table.
Fragrant, exciting and delicious wines made from native grapes such as Ablerhino, Godello, Hondarribi, and Verdajo along with world varietals such as Chardonnay, govern Green Spain. The DOs of Rías Baixas, Valdeorras, Txakolí offer Spanish white wines that intrigue event the most discerning consumer.
The Duero River Valley; best known for DO Ribera del Duero also contains the regions of Toro, Rueda and Cigales producing some of Spain's most fascinating and heady Tempranillo, Verdejo and Garnacha respectively.
Tempranillo is still king in the Ebro River valley because of the DO Rioja but the DO Navarra is making new world varietals relevant here as well. Somontano and Campo de Borja are two up-and-coming regions that should not be missed either.
In whole the Mediterranean coast is overflowing with top-notch wines at bargain prices; from the D.O. Emporda all the way down to Jumilla and not to mention Valencia. This coastal region is a savvy wine shoppers dream.
I could go on for pages about the Meseta alone, here the D.O. La Mancha is disproving all the skeptics that swore you could never make quality wine on the hot flat plateau. Guess again, Spain the little rebel of the wine world makes all of it own rules and continues to surprise and over deliver.
