Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc loosely translated from French as "Wild White" is a grape that is known for racy white wines with fresh acidity and striking fruit, mineral and grassy notes. The home of Sauvignon Blanc is Western France in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley. The fact that the Sauvignon Blanc styles form theses two regions are so extremely different speaks to the versatility of this grape. Because of this fact Sauvignon Blanc is grown in almost every wine region in the world. New Zealand and California are certainly the leaders along with the Loir and Bordeaux but Sauvignon Blanc is prominent in Australia, South Africa and Chile. Fruit notes can range from stone fruits such as peach to tree fruit like apples. I have often discovered tangerine (especially in the Sauvignons that are blended with Sémillon as is done in Bordeaux) and bolder citrus fruit such as grapefruit is prominent in Southern Hemisphere Sauvignon Blancs. Sometimes almost no fruit is detectable; these wines are driven by mineral and smoke. (Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé) No matter what the flavor profile during the hot summer days or at the dinner table Sauvignon Blancs firm acidity and crispness are always welcome.
